St Nicholas is the parish church of Chawton. The church is located within the grounds of Chawton House. Access is on foot, but there is car parking available next to the church for those with mobility difficulties.
Jane Austen’s mother and sister – both named Cassandra – are buried in the churchyard. The churchyard is now closed for burials but there is a graveyard situated along the main Portsmouth road which is still in use. There are services held each Sunday and on major Feast days, such as Easter and Christmas. Dates and times of services are printed in the parish magazine, and are also displayed on the notice board at the top of the driveway to Chawton House.
St Nicholas is open for visitors during day light hours throughout the year. “I do hope that you will be able to visit us, to look at the beauty of the building, to take time to pray and be still in this place hallowed by centuries of prayer or to join us in any of our regular acts of worship.”
